Feel free to do whatever you wish during the day but there will be recommended walks and tours available.  If you have any particular interests such as the geology, natural history or culture of the island then we will be happy to guide you.  We can also advise on local restaurants and places of interest.

Do not miss:

  • La Hougue Bie  One of the best Neolithic remains in Europe just a stone’s throw away.
  • Mont Orgueil Castle dating back to the 13th century.
  • Elizabeth Castle  situated on its own islet in St Aubin’s bay.
  • Hamptonne Living Museum  Extraordinary collection of farm buildings lovingly restored to show country life in the past.
  • Jersey Museum  Merchant’s town house lovingly restored and incorporating a presentation of the history and traditions of Jersey using the most modern museum techniques.
  • Samarès Manor   Situated a short drive from our house.  This has beautiful “Japanese” gardens.
  • Jersey War Tunnels  There are a number of vestiges of the German Occupation in the island.  This underground hospital provides the most spectacular display.  There are many others such as the more personal collection [including two Enigma machines!] at the German Bunker in St Ouen’s Bay.
  • Durrell Wildlife  Zoological gardens founded by Gerald Durrell that have been successful in saving many rare species from extinction.
  • Eric Young Orchid Foundation  Incredible collection of exotic orchids.
  • Howard Davis Park  One of the loveliest public parks in Jersey on the outskirts of the town.  It incorporates a small British and American war cemetery.
  • Living Legend St Lawrence This attraction is excellent for children.  Visitors are treated to "the Jersey Experience" where videos, holograms and moving models are used in an imaginative way to present the history of Jersey.
  • La Mare Vineyard Jersey has its own wines!  Between 30 and 40,000 bottles of excellent wine are produced as well as crushing up to 100 tonnes of apples for cider and Apple Brandy. In addition, La Mare produces speciality and Genuine Jersey preserves, mustards, fudge, traditional black butter, and chocolates.

Activities

Walking:
A large proportion of our visitors are keen ramblers.  We have numerous walking guides for those who wish to take long walks and a set of laminated sheets with shorter circular walks for those who wish to use their car.

Cycling:
Jersey is very hilly but that does not deter our keen cyclists.  There is an excellent network of cycle routes along many of Jersey’s quieter green lands.  A map is available from Jersey Tourism.  At the end of the day a lockable garage is available for you to store your bikes.  There is also the option of hiring bikes.

Swimming:
We are right on the sea wall!  If the tide is high just take your towel with you onto the beach and have a refreshing swim.  At other times we can offer advice on ideal locations for you to swim in the sea.  An indoor pool complex can be found near the harbour at St Helier.

Canoes and Kayaks:
Why not take the opportunity to learn?  Our friendly neighbours Trudi and Derek offer a range of lessons to suit all levels.   They can also arrange for you to kayak around Jersey’s ‘colonies’ – the reefs around the Écréhous and the Minquiers.

Sports

Jersey has a wide range of sporting facilities that are available including:

  • Billiards
  • Bowling
  • Horse Riding
  • Golf
  • Swimming
  • Angling and sea fishing
  • Scuba diving
  • Surfing
  • Tennis

Night Life

Nature

The area in front of Ben Mor is part of the UN Ramsar site of southern Jersey.  Many a happy hour can be spent exploring the rock pools within view of your bedroom.  It is possible but dangerous to walk  to Icho and Seymour towers towards the horizon.  We can arrange for you to go on a guided tour to explore the life on the rocks.

Keen ornithologist should bring their binoculars to explore the enormous area of rocks to see the range of gulls, egrets, cormorants and other sea birds that populate our shores.  A new bird hide recently been opened by the Jersey National Trust overlooking St Ouen’s Pond.  Then, for a special treat, we will advise you on how to find the choughs now flying free over Jersey’s north coast after having being extinct for 100 years.

The jewel in the crown is undoubtedly the Durrell Wildlife Preservation Trust.  How many zoos are there with an enclosure with words equivalent to “Durrell saved this species from extinction”?

Gardens

One of our guests, a prominent garden expert, once told us that the whole of Jersey is a garden.  Certainly, it seems like that especially in May and June.  However, the island is pretty any time of the year; we have seen narcissi flowering around Christmas time.  But for splendid horticultural beauty one only has to visit the many public gardens dotted around the island.  Among the many places that you can visit, Howard Davis Park with free entry is always worth a visit with its lovely rose garden.  Equally pretty but with an entrance charge are the gardens of Samarès Manor.  Not to be missed, however, are the award winning orchids at the Eric Young Orchid Foundation.  In addition, a number of private gardens are open to visitors for one day each year.  We keep a calendar of these and will advise you when they become available.

History

Helier has been a member of the local historical society since he was a child and can offer advice on exploring the island with an extraordinary amount of history for so small an area.  He will show you where Neanderthal man chased woolly mammoths, advise on visiting the remarkable collection of Neolithic sites and help you to explore Jersey’s military history from the Iron Age forts to the follies of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall.  We can provide a set of laminated information sheets so that you can make sense of Jersey’s ancient parish churches.

Helier has made a special study of Mont Orgueil Castle dating back to the 13th century and has escorted a number of our guests there.  Started rather later in Tudor times, Elizabeth Castle also offers a good day out.

We keep informed of the occasional opening times of various German bunkers.   One bunker that is always open houses the Channel Islands Military Museum and we would advise anyone interested in this period to discover the story of the German Occupation by visiting the harrowing Jersey War Tunnels.

Devotees of vernacular architecture should visit the museum of country life at Hamptonne .  Stay with us during early September and we will help you to benefit from the Open Days season when properties are open for just one day a year.  The Jersey National Trust now has a magnificent Georgian House in St Helier.  If you are a member of any National Trust then bring your cards.  It will also give you free entry to Quétivel Mill.  If you like Art Deco then Ann and Helier can advise you where to see some splendid examples.  In particular, do visit St Matthew’s Church that contains a large collection of glass by René Lalique
